It was with great sadness that we learnt of the passing of Niall Bourke. Niall was Club Captain in 1964/65 but he was much more than that - player, coach, referee, selector, administrator. The question was asked "What position did Niall play?". The answer was anywhere he was needed. Niall was that type of person; he had a big heart and was dedicated to Suttonians for many decades, happy to play front row one week and in the backs the next and he contributed for many years after his playing days had ended.

Niall played at a time when there were many great characters in the club and he was amongst the best of them - anyone lucky enough to spend time with him and his late brother-in-law Jackie Bell (another former Club Captain) couldn't help but be entertained as they regaled about their many exploits on and off the pitch.

Even in recent times as Niall's health deteriorated he was always keen for the latest news on the club; he still made it down to matches when he could and to the very end he remained a man who's insightfulness and reading of the game were second to none, whether that be Suttonians, Leinster or Ireland.

To his beloved wife Valerie, we extend our sincerest sympathies. To his sons, former players Stephen and Ian (current Suttonians Youth Coordinator), grandchildren (including former players Fionn and Donncha), daughters in law Siobhan and Roisin and his extended family and broad circle of friends, we extend our heartfelt condolences and thank-you for sharing him with us.

The recurring word since news broke of Niall's passing has been "gentleman" - he was all of that and more.

MAY HIS GENTLE SOUL REST IN PEACE.
